The importance of self-esteem in early childhood

Self-esteem in early childhood is KEY to increased confidence as the child grows older. My daughter had a slight speech impediment when she was a toddler. As a result she talked infrequently and was very shy. After the speech impediment was corrected she remained shy and timid at times with a small amount of confidence in herself. My husband and I continually praised every small accomplishment she mastered. We introduced her to gymnastics and soccer and dance and praised her whenever she tried her best. We never stopped encouraging her and little by little she overcame her shyness and as her confidence in herself grew so did her accomplishments. Today is is a smart, articulate, talented 10 year old with an healthy self-esteem. I think this resulted in bolstering her self-esteem when she was a small child. We believed in her so she never stopped believing in herself!
