Alanis Morissette is not exactly what you’d call a shrinking violet. She lives her life publicly, which makes her secret wedding with rapper-boyfriend MC Souleye a bit befuddling. Technically she married him May 22, 2010, a week before her 36th birthday, so she’s kept a lid on it for quite awhile.

Even after it was announced by Alanis herself in public forums, she kept the details to herself. That’s something of a conundrum for those familiar with Canadian-born Morissette’s music. Lyrically-speaking, she’s never been one to hold back on a feeling.

She’s known for making a big public outcry of sorts in her song “You Oughta Know” from Jagged Little Pill, her debut album. It has always been rumored to be about Full House star and stand-up comedian Dave Coulier. It was a mystery to Coulier initially who heard it on the radio much like the rest of us. He recognized the voice, said he thought it was familiar, but that was the end of it.

It took years for Coulier to publicly admit that the song was about him. He said he realized how very hurt Morissette was when the song came out.  Um, you think?  Most of the time you hear that song, you’ll get the edited version, and even that is chock full of venom.

Despite the obvious pain Morissette went through in the birth of that album, she got a payoff she probably didn’t expect given the lukewarm reception her music had been given before. During that year, You Oughta Know took Single of the year, while Jagged Little Pill was named Album of the Year. At the Grammy’s she also won: Female Vocalist of the Year, Best Rock Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. All of our breakups should be so productive.

Over the last year, Morissette settled in with MC Souleye, 30, (a.k.a. Mario Treadway Souleye, and she seems quite content to just get on with her life. Her news on Twitter was to the point: "Hi guys! So happy to share with you that my man Souleye and I got married," she wrote. "We're very excited to embark on this journey with each other."

Morissette has sold over 40 million records world-wide, and while she retains her Canadian citizenship, she is also a naturalized citizen of the United States as of 2005. During 2005 she opened for the Rolling Stones for several dates on their Bigger, Better, More tour.

Along the way, Morissette stretched beyond music to an acting career, an arduous road with some questionable roles. Most recently, she appeared in episodes of Weeds as Dr. Laura Kitson, described as a “no-nonsense obstetrician”.

Seriously, would you accuse Alanis Morissette of nonsense? In the words of Mr. T: “I pity the fool.”
