At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the release of the Apple iPhone 4 (aka Apple HD), a highly anticipated product whose release has been preceded by several well publicized leaks. In the iPhone 4 Apple has made the thinnest iPhone ever and has made numerous enhancements to it that make it a “must have” for iPhone users everywhere. Here are just a few of the features of the new Apple iPhone 4.
Colors
iPhone 4 is available in black and white. Apple has a variety of custom "bumper" cases that provide for the customization of the new iPhone.
Enhanced CPU and Graphics
iPhone 4 is powered by the Apple A4 CPU, an advanced integration of a Cortex A8 processor a Power VR SGX 535 high definition graphics core. With 256 megabytes of memory, iPhone 4 is powerful enough to drive a display that includes about four times the number of pixels as the iPhone 3. Dubbed the “Retina Display” by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the display is supposed to have the more pixels than the eye can discern at typical distances and higher definition than a quality magazine.
The 3 ½ inch IPS display produces a contrast ratio of 800:1, quadruple the quality of the iPhone 3GS. The new display also improves visibility because it can be viewed at a wider angle. Because the new iPhone 4.0 (iOS 4) operating system adapts existing apps to the new contrast and resolution, Jobs asserts that users will have a better experience with iPhone HD automatically, right off the bat, with existing apps (although new HD apps presumably will be preferred).
Cameras
The iPhone HD has a new camera with a larger sensor, flash, higher resolution, and a bigger lens than its predecessor. It also has a front facing camera for video conferencing use. During his keynote address, Jobs demonstrated the Face Time video conferencing application that works over Wi-Fi only.
Battery
We already knew that the iPhone 4 would have a larger battery. It powers all the extra horsepower of the new unit for longer per charge than the iPhone 3GS.
Operating System
The new iPhone 4 HD features the new iPhone 4 operating system that Steve Jobs introduced earlier this year. Now called iOS 4, the software will also be available as a free upgrade for existing users on June 21. Some of the features of the iPhone OS 4 will not be available on the older phones, although most features including improved multitasking and the iAd advertising server should work well. A new version of iBooks that adds support for PDF files is included.
Additional Features and Options
The newly released Apple iPhone 4 has a noise canceling mic and a micro SIM port for expansion. The design of the new unit features a decorative rim made of stainless steel and dark glass that doubles as the unit's antenna. A new iMovie application is due out later this year to be used for movie viewing on the iPhone 4
Pricing
Apple has announced reduced pricing for the Apple iPhone 3GS as well as early incentive options for existing users to upgrade to iPhone HD. The iPhone 4 is to sell at $199 for the 16 GB version and $299 for the 32 GB version.
