Using creative writing as a healing tool

by Wayne Leon Learmond

Created on: June 07, 2010

Creative Writing is used as a creative tool, without a shadow of doubt. There are thousand upon thousands of writers, myself included, that have used creative writing in such a way. Writing is therapeutic, and to put down all that one wants to say orally but cannot, for any reason, is a wonderful release.

Whether your writing is in short stories - releasing through your characters your tension and worries, poetry, or whatever genre takes your fancy - to using writing as a healing too and a creative forcel has many benefits. One finds that poetry, in whatever form, is one of the main genres that can help in the healing process when one is suffering with chronic depression.

Indeed, there are many people who have never written seriously before, to find that they are suddenly, for some unknown reason, able to put down in words what they cannot say.   Many people, through the genre of poetry, find that they have a natural gift for writing - although they may not see it themselves.  To be encouraged by fellow writers who have all being doing it a lot longer, and are more experienced, can be a wonderful boost to one's ego and state of mind.

It is then that anyone suffering with severe depression finds that wriitng poetry, all what they feel through their poems, can be a tremendous release. It is akin to a valve being opened suddenly, all of your creative juices begin to flow, and one then finds that writing becomes like a drug.

There are many times that people who have never written seriously before cannot now stop. On taking up the pen, or sitting at the keyboard  they then find that writing can, and very often, opens up a whole new world for them.  In fact what is happening is that if people like your work and tell you straight, your writing can then set you off on a journey of self-discovery and earn you money too along the way.

You may find out more about yourself through your writing than you would have at any other point in your life. On poetry sites especially, there are many people who began their writing careers because they were depressed in some way, shape or form. They took up the pen, or sat at their keyboard and simply began to write. Not really knowing what they wanted to say or put down, but they did it anyway.

Such people found that upon others reading their work and replying through constructive critiques, that they actually began to feel better within themselves. Creative writing has always been used as a tool
