Book reviews: Fever Dream, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Fever Dream by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is the fourth book that teams together Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast and Sargent Vincent D'Agosta and in a plot twist in the middle of the book D'Agosta's love Laura Haywood becomes a major player in the story.  You also get to find out a little bit more about Pendegast's ward  Ms. Constance Greene and I must say that Ms. Constance Greene is a very fabulous character and one that in my opinion deserves an entire book of her own.

Preston and Lincoln appear to have this series down.  In Fever Dream you get some back story on Pendergast and learn that many years ago he was married and that he has spent the last twelve years believing that his wife fell victim to a terrible accident.  Within the first few chapters of the book you learn that her death was not accidental but actually a finely detailed murder.   This revelation immediately moves Special Agent Pendergast to embark on a search for his wife's killer.

One of the things that Preston and Lincoln do so well is they keep the story moving and they also have the ability to throw the reader for a curve slowly taking you along a line of thought and then abruptly changing the game with a small piece of knowledge or plot revealed by one of the characters.

If you are a fan of the Pendergast novels you will find this one enjoyable.  The introduction of Haywood as a main player allows the reader to learn more about her and also more about Aloysius one of current fictions most intriguing characters.  The interactions between Haywood and Pendergast allow for some interesting dialogue.  Additionally, when Ms. Constance Greene shows up any reader who has followed her story will once again be intrigued.  The information we learn about Constance in this book is one that I hope the authors will continue to expand as the series continues.  There is a new character introduced who is the treating psychiatrist for Constance and one wonders if the authors are setting up a scenario where we will see more of this doctor.

Fever Dream is a good mystery and a great read.  Along with all that fiction has to offer you will learn something about the life of the great American artist John James Audubon.
