Tips for increasing awareness and respect toward teenagers

by Elke C

Tips for increasing awareness and respect toward teenagers.

Most people are aware of teens. Yet they see them through their biased "looking glass eyes". Teenagers throughout history have been given labels such as rebels, irresponsible, and disrespectful. Unfortunately, teenagers are more than willing to live up to this reputation if you label them as such.

You must be aware of teens as people who are in transition. Sometimes imature and childish and in the next minute responsible and mature. They will oscillate from extremes until they finish maturing. What is important as an adult is to treat them with the repect you would if they were to be mature 100% of the time.

Love them for who they are trying to become.

Encourage them to explore new things and grow to their full potential.

Enjoy what they bring to your relationship with them.

Although rules must be enforced, getting beyond being the "enforcer" in the upbringing of teens, allows you to see teens as bright spirits who are looking for positive reinforcement and respect.
