Treating and preventing acne

Created on: June 05, 2010

If you have ever suffered from acne then you know how embarrassing the problem can be. Millions of dollars are spent every year to find that perfect acne treatment. But the truth is, different medications work for some people while they have little effect for others. In some cases certain creams or lotions can even make things worse. The process involves a bit of trial and error as finding the right treatment may take a while. But the important thing is to stick with it and not to give up. No acne cream will work right away so it’s important to keep this in mind. There may also be complications with side effects that can be quite unpleasant. People with acne tend to have sensitive skin so harsh treatments can often really aggravate the skin.

If your acne medication seems to be taking a long time to work, don’t give up on it right away. Most good treatment takes at least several weeks no matter how effective they are. This is because acne is deep medical condition that your body must have time to eliminate. So while you wait for your medication to work, just take note of the side effects and track your progress. And while you’re at it, make sure not to pick at your face or else you might develop acne scarring that can be worse than the initial problem to begin with. It may be hard not to pop a pimple, but doing so will put you at risk of spreading flare ups. This is because pimples are filled with bacteria and white blood cells, and disturbing acne can cause more complications under the surface of the skin.

Sometime when it comes to how to get rid of acne, you might have to spend some time before you find something that works. When looking for a good acne cream or lotion you will want it to be as free from oily ingredients as possible. You will also want to stay away from any unnecessary perfumes that can further bother your skin. Most topical acne cream will have an initial drying effect on your skin so be prepared for that. If excessive redness or severe peeling occurs, then you should consult your doctor. It might not be a sign that you will have to stop using the cream, but it’s always best to see a professional when in doubt. In the meantime stay away from common acne myths that only serve as a distraction.
