The Sentinel
Atop his throne of plastic crates
Azure eyes, of almond, glow and
Warily they trace my movements
I dish-out wet food, slowly. Slow...
I make a move to pet his head
And out the window, once again
I can’t expect an instant friendship
It took two years to become James’ friend.
Darkness brings him calming peace.
Ghostly sounds of better days
When all his siblings nestled warmly
Around the man, who took in strays.
Tomorrow, landlords close his window
And toss that life into the trash.
I have one day to convince this cat
I am his friend…it's far too brash.
But I’ll sneak into this midnight sanctum
When ‘The Sentinel’ sleeps upon his throne...
Throw a blanket over almond-azure eyes
Aglow, and try to bring him home.

Stretch and leap,
Down to the floor.
Preen soft grey fur,
Just
I sleep, I eat, I sleep some more
I'm always watchful at the door
There isn't anything I miss
Except my empty cat food dish
