Tips for parents assisting children with homework

by Ganelle Davis

Created on: June 02, 2010

The very first thing a parent must do ,while assisting their child with homework, is set aside a place where the child will be uninterrupted and make certain the child has all of the supplies needed to complete the homework assignment. The supplies may even be personalized with the child's name or even something simple as a book cover in their favorite color or favorite sport's icon.. Exciting your child about doing homework is the first tip to employ in this, at times, tedious, endeavor.

The most important thing to remember is that the homework assignment is the sole responsibility of the child. Emphasize this to your child , the responsibility of completing the home work assignment is their responsibility. This will allow them to have pride in their work. Always, encourage your child to complete their homework and do their very best. A star, on their calendar at home will allow them to see their progress, each time they complete a homework assignment.  Excite and encourage your child. Make it a big deal in your household.

Non messy snacks are fine. Snacks such as air-popped popcorn or trail mix.  Keep in mind, you don't want sticky hands to mar that 100% paper.  So please keep snacks to a minimum.  A well balanced meal before starting homework , may negate those hunger pains. After all, we don't want a stomach growling to interfere with your child's concentration. Do we?

The assignment should be started as soon as the assignment comes home. Don't allow your child to procrastinate. Encourage your child to get started as soon as possible. These tips,  will soon be how your child tackles the assignment of homework and brings home those well deserved A's.

By encouraging to your child to lesson plan the assignment .  A little work can be done each day, until the assignment is completed. Make certain the child has the correct due date and fully understands the assignment.  Then, plan the assignment on a wall calendar, with a targeted due date to complete the project or assignment. Make certain the due date is at least a day or two before the project or assignment is due.

Limiting t.v. viewing or playing outside should be enforced until the homework is completed. While rewarding your child with these activities may be fine after the assignment is completed. It is best to keep your child on a schedule the entire school year, so that they might adapt easier to more rigid homework schedules. Why not make homework fun? You may tell your children, "learning is it's on reward"  Very soon they will see for themselves, exactly what you mean by that..
