The first thing to consider before choosing a sewing machine is to decide what purpose it will serve. This may seem straightforward, but a sewing machine is a valuable appliance and can be either an treasured tool or a white elephant.
All modern sewing machines have some basic features and many also have unique and patented features specific to each model. Some sewing machines also have specialized features for dressmaking, quilting or embroidery.
Basic sewing machine
Today’s sewing machines sew straight, reverse, zigzag, buttonholes, zippers, and most also have a variety decorative stitches. Usually a separate foot is supplied to sew in zippers. These budget-priced machines are excellent value for the beginner or the infrequent user. This type of sewing machine is adequate for most household sewing, including sewing clothes. They often provide optional attachments and feet, which you can purchase separately. A wide choice of basic sewing machines is available between brands and models.
Household sewing
For sewing heavier household items such as curtains, blinds, and cushions, a more heavy-duty sewing machine is preferable. You would need a sewing machine that is capable of sewing different and several thickness of furnishing fabric for sewing household fabrics. These machines also need to be capable of sewing lace curtains, piped cushions, and vinyl chair covers.
Quilting and patchwork
Dedicated quilters look for some specialized features in their sewing machines. They appreciate features such as a larger area to work on, adjustable stitching speeds, adjustable foot pressure, and quilting attachments.
Embroidery
Machine embroiderers appreciate a wide selection of decorative stitches, patterns, motifs, and lettering. Many of these stitches are built-in or programmed in the sewing machines, while others are often available on optional discs, or cards. The ability to connect this type of sewing machine to a computer is often available providing an even greater choice of stitches. They are often among the highest priced machines.
Dressmaking
Some features dressmakers look for are easy or automatic threading, automatic buttonholes, automatic and dependable tension adjustment, adjustable speeds, adjustable stitch lengths and widths. Multiple thread-reel capability, bright working light, free arm, and a variety of useful and decorative stitches are worthwhile applications.
The purchase of a sewing machine requires careful consideration of what features are required, the availability of accessories and spare parts, dependability, the warranty provided, and the price. Visit a store that sells several brands and models. Ask for a demonstration and try it yourself before deciding. Alternatively, collect brochures or visit the websites of sewing machines manufacturers you are considering. Another option is to visit different stands at a sewing or craft show. The more informed you are, the better you will be able to make the right choice of the right sewing machine for you.
