unless the players and the player's union gets involved. There have been numerous calls by medical specialists, the media and even some fans, to get the rules changed, however the NHL has been slow to respond. Why should it be the players' responsibility to ensure his head is adequately protected? If the League dictates all other facets of the players' life in the game, why not protect their product? Players should be demanding that their sponsors, teams and the League start investigating the issue and determine a course of action. Sure, it may take several years to get everyone in synch, but most people would think it's an important enough reason to get things moving.
From a fan's perspective, I would hope that the League would do something about the helmet rules so that I can see my favourite players actually playing the game, not just adjusting their helmets as they skate down the wing. If I were a player's spouse, I would most certainly be urging my husband or boyfriend to wear his helmet properly, because I want to be sure that he's around in one piece when his career is over. From a League perspective, it should be mandating proper helmet use of its players in order to preserve the product that it is trying to promote. The NHL cannot afford to lose or tarnish its product, as it's already struggling to increase viewer ship in the American market. But that is a topic for another discussion.
