How to download the leaked Google Android 2.2 update for Nexus One

While the Google Android 2.2 update is officially not here yet, a version with most of the features that will be available and only a couple minor bugs is available to Nexus One ERE27 owners if they choose to grab it. Google made a developers beta version of Google Android 2.2 “Froyo” available to tech reviewers and members of the press who took the Nexus One for a test Drive. News of that was hard to keep under wraps and someone either leaked or found the download link for the version on the Google Developers Blog, and it went public.

While Google is not encouraging anyone to download the leaked Google Android 2.2 version, they are not going to penalize anyone for doing it either according to Google Spokesman Ry Guy. That means you will still get the OTA (Over The Air) official update. They have said they will not consider downloading the leaked version a breach of warranty. That is the good news. The bad news is the version has a few glitches, and before we get into downloading there are a few things to watch for.

The glitches you may encounter are that voice dialing is hinky and Open Calendar does not work for everyone. Regarding voice dialing, in some cases for whatever reason, a “2” is added to the beginning of the number, and in others a “9” appears in the number. Obviously the calls will not go through. In the case of Open Calendar, it is just a hit or miss thing. Most people are reporting having trouble with it, so don’t count on it working, if it does you got a bonus.

When downloading the Google Android 2.2 leaked update, be aware that there are plenty of people taking advantage of the hype to plant false links that are designed to install some form of malware/spyware which means your information may be vulnerable to hijacking. The second thing to keep in mind is the file should only be 41MB to 44MB that is used for the install. Anything larger or smaller than that do not download.

Before downloading make sure you actually have a Nexus One ERE27. On your phone, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Build Number. If you see anything aside from ERE27, the download may not take and you’ll have to wait for the OTA upgrade.

To locate a link to get the Google Android 2.2 upgrade, just Google the phrase “Google Android 2.2 leaked upgrade link” (Not in quotation marks). The only reason one is not being provided here is because the mirror sites hosting it come and go rather quickly. Don’t worry,
