How to install a yard light

Installation of a yard light could be a relatively straightforward or difficult task, depending on a few key factors.

What type of lamp post are you intending to install? Is there power already available to you in close proximity to the area where you want to install the light? How good are your basic electrical skills?

First determine the source of your power.  If there is currently no power in your yard, now is the time to add it.  The best practice is to add a new circuit on your panel and feed the wire outside.  This is rather advanced and you should not poke around on your panel unless you are certain you know what you are doing.  It may be wise to hire a pro for this section if you are not confident.

Ideally at the end of this step, you want a weatherproof the outlet on the outside of your home.  You should install the type that is not recessed into the siding rather you want the type that rests on the siding.  This outlet will serve two purposes.  It will give you additional power where you did not have it before.  This can be useful for a trimmer, radio, or any other plug-in accessory you need on your new patio.

Secondly, you will be installing a GFCI outlet here.  This will protect this outlet and your future lamp post from the possibility of shock in the event of a short circuit.  It is code in most areas that all outdoor circuits be protected this way.

Once you have your power source, your next step is to plan the location and the route to the fixture.  You may not want to locate your post too close to a sitting area as it has been my experience that ten or so feet away is ideal.  The reason is that light attracts bugs and sometimes if your light is too close you just call the bugs to you.  A short distance away allows you to enjoy the light but the bugs stay a bit away.

If you are planning this circuit in conjunction with other work such as a new patio you will have to co-ordinate the work.  Remember that you must bury the power to a depth where it is safe from the likelihood of being ruptured by a shovel or other tool.  You can use metal or plastic conduit for extra protection or you can purchase special wire that is used for direct burial.  Check your local code for guidelines as to the depth and acceptable materials that you can use.

Once you have planned the route of your line you should also select the location of the switch.  You can place
