Yeast infection, or candidiasis, is caused by the fungus Candida albicans. Candida exists in all of us, but can develop into an infection in some individuals.
Both men and women are susceptible to candidiasis, but women are more likely to experience symptoms, such as itching and discharge, from the infection. Candidiasis usually develops in the vagina, but can also develop in other moist areas, such as the mouth and skin.
Overuse of prescription antibiotics may be the cause of an increase in candidiasis during the past half century. Conventional candidiasis treatment consists of prescription and over the counter medications, such as nystatin, but natural remedies can also be effective. Obtain a medical diagnosis and discuss treatment options with your doctor.
Diet
When treating a yeast infection, start with a yeast-defeating diet. Yeast thrives in sugar, starch, and alcohol, so avoid foods such as breads, potatoes, and alcoholic beverages. Include fish, chicken, and fresh vegetables.
Yogurt
Another beneficial food is plain yogurt, which contains friendly Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. Check the label and choose a yogurt which contains live cultures. Yogurt can also be topically applied to the infected area.
Garlic
Garlic and onions are known as antibiotic, antifungal remedies. Raw garlic tastes strong, but it is also a strong deterrent against candidiasis. James Duke recommends large quantities of chopped raw garlic—as much as 12 cloves—taken up to 3 times daily.
Echinacea
Echinacea has become a popular immune-boosting herbal supplement for good reason. In a German study, 60 percent of women who received an antifungal medication experienced a recurrence of their yeast infection, compared with 10 percent of those who received Echinacea with their medication. This herb stimulates phagocytosis, the process by which white blood cells destroy the fungus.
Herbalist Kathleen Maier notes that a douche prepared from organic apple cider vinegar restores the body’s pH balance. She recommends the following preparation: add ¼ cup organic cider vinegar to 2 cups of water. Douche twice a day for 3 days, then once a day for 4 days.
Conclusion
Discuss the use of any of these remedies with your doctor. Natural remedies for yeast infection are as accessible as your kitchen cabinet or supermarket. In conclusion, here is a recipe from “The Green Pharmacy” by herbalist James A. Duke, Ph.D.:
Candidicial Soup (4 servings)
4 cups water
2 onions
4 cloves garlic, minced
Sage
Thyme
Ground cloves
Salt
Ground black pepper
Acidophilus yogurt
In a saucepan, bring water, garlic, and onions to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes until vegetables are tender. Season sparingly with sage, thyme, ground cloves, salt, and pepper. Top with a dollop of yogurt.
