There are many diagnostic tests that can be done for Autism and Speech Language Communication assessment as well, so this disorder is not over diagnosed. Also due to the most important medical distinguishing indicator of autism, from Asperger's disorder , and that is, the speech component. With Asperger's, which is considered to be on the high end of the autism spectrum , a child will have the ability to communicate via verbal speech. There is a way of testing the child's verbal skills, even at a young age. The autistic spectral disorders will make themselves known at about the age of three, if not to some parents, before. With the testing of verbal skills, the child will show verbal speech delays with autism. Other reasons will need to be ruled out, such as hearing problems, repeated ear infections, physical oral problems, such as tongue placement, roof of mouth (cleft palate), and even oral motor problems.
A child with autism, which is considered to be low on the spectrum of this array of disorders, will not be able to communicate verbally or will be verbally delayed, without focused and early intervention. Sometimes, depending on how high they fall within this spectrum, they may never learn to verbally communicate. They may learn compensatory communication methods such as gesture or use a communication board (augmentative device) or sign language. Many times they will have, physical ticks that are body jerks that are not appropriate. It is a spectrum, so that a child can be diagnosed with autism and be able to speak, but the parent notices that the speech lacks the same intonations or inflections one would expect to hear, even from a three year old child. They may speak in a rhythmic way that is softer or louder than others. They will not make the same eye contact and if they do, it is only momentary at best. With children that fall on the more autistic end of the spectrum there are more cognitive deficits and even mental retardation in the worst cases. In some cases they may have a special gift. Certain abilities (Savant Syndrome) with a great focus for particular things, such as, mathematics, music, or a great interest and ability to work with animals. For a great website for such gifts, visit: Savant Academy
I do believe that autism is on the rise, but that autism spectral disorders are also being evaluated better and sooner. As for being over diagnosed, there is diagnostic proof, with age appropriate testing for language and verbal skills that make autism harder to misdiagnose.
