Choosing a new sewing machine these days can be tricky. They offer so many options that it might leave you standing there in front of them all wondering what to buy. The store sales people might try to steer you towards something with options you might rarely, if ever, use. The best way to choose one is to make a list of the needs you truly have when it comes to your sewing projects and capabilities.
If you are planning on enhancing your abilities then you might opt for a machine with more functions. Price point might help you decide as well. The more the machine offers, the higher the price. Do your research first on the reputation of the machines. Check out customer reviews on unbiased sites on the web if you can.
Take that information and weed out the machines that have a bad reputation or have reported problems. Now make a list of the things you need your machine to be capable. What types of stitches do you most often use when you sew. Do you prefer a digital machine or one with knobs that might be easier to use for you. Don't buy one with a quilting table because it looks really impressive if you never have any intention of picking up quilting.
One option that is nice to have is the embroidery option. Even if you have never used it, you will always find a use for this one. You can embroider names on baby blankets you make or on the sleeve of your children's favorite jacket. If you make a lot of home sewn gifts, this one is an option worth investing in. Some machines offer double needle sewing. This is another great option but really, unless you are going to use it, it is one you might not need.
If you are not in a hurry, sign up for a few classes if the store lets you use their machines and take a few different ones on a test drive. Then you will not only be able to make a hands on decision but also learn a few things about the machine as well as getting the joy of sewing all bundled together. Most businesses will offer free lessons on the machine you buy. Inquire about this before you buy because you might be better off finding a place that does offer this anyways.
Make sure you read and understand the return policy in case you do decide to go for a different machine either because you want a simpler one or to go for the more deluxe type. There is nothing more disappointing than making a somewhat large investment in something and being disappointed and stuck with the purchase. Even if they only offer you the money back in store credit it is better than not taking the machine back at all.
Do the research, test drive and make a list of what you need and what you want. Getting a new sewing machine is exciting, especially because it has probably been a while since you bought your last one so you are sure to be amazed at all the new features of the new ones.
