http://www.dmoz.org is the online directory project. Make sure you have an entry there in all the appropriate category.

Go to http://www.stumbleupon.com/ and get their toolbar, and then go and recommend your site to them. This will allow other people to randomly stumble upon your site. Same thing with http://del.icio.us/

Stubleupon and Delicious alone can generate significant amounts of traffic, but you'll only keep that traffic if your website is good. If your website is bad, those sites will record that people did NOT like your site, and your traffic will disappear. I used this strategy for Sportsdot (http://www.sportsdot.org) and in less than 2 years, it is one of the top 60,000 sites on the web (according to Netcraft). That seems like a big number, but compare it to some other sites.

Try to find sites similar or complimentary to yours and offer link exchanges. If they have a place for input (like a blog) be sure to post often - and reference your own site (though do not blogspam them). Also check out HUGE traffic sites like Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.com) or Myspace.com, and make posts there, again with your signature referencing your site.

With the above method you want to make sure your posts are insightful and appropriate. If your posts are stupid, people will think your site is too.
