Tips for choosing the right curtains for your home

by Frances Stanford

Curtains to the windows of your home add an additional frame in addition to enhancing the grace and elegance of the room. When you start to purchase new curtains, you not only have to consider the décor of the room and the size of the window, but you should also consider the context of the wall where the window is located and the view through the window. The wall space around the window can help improve the shape and proportion of the curtains and the view will determine the length and the fabric you choose.

Wall space.

Always make sure that you have enough wall space on both sides of the window to allow the curtains to flow away from the window. If you do not have enough space on each side, the curtains will look as if they have been crammed into the window. They will also block the light and darken the room. If you do not have enough wall space on both sides of the window, it may be a better idea to use a blind instead.

Shape of the window.

It is more difficult to hang curtains on a round window or one that is of an unusual size and shape. You could hang a conventional set of curtains and ignore the shape of the window altogether. You can also purchase a curtain rod that fits the shape of the top of the window and arrange the curtains to fit on this rod. One effective way of dealing with such a window is to simply hang a piece of lace fabric over the window so that it covers the length and width and part of the wall.

Size of the window.

You really don’t need to use curtains to a small window. A simple painted border around the facings will add the enhancement that you need. You can also use a small topper across the top of the window if you want to add curtains to just the top. If the window is long, it is easier to purchase curtains for it. Tall windows lend themselves to toppers and side panels, whereas windows that are wide require you to include fabric over part of the wall on each side.

Length of the curtains.

If you want to create a rustic look to the window in a room, use short curtains that come just to the window sill or a little lower. If you want to create a formal look, floor-length curtains are the best choice, but you may want to have them off the floor if you have a radiator or a heater under the window you will need to make adjustments to the length.

Using curtains to enhance a view.

Curtains can serve as a frame for a gorgeous scenic view or even hide an ugly view. In either case, you need to take advantage of the colors in the room. If you are trying to hide the view and concentrate on the room, use curtain fabric that has bold colors and designs. On the other hand, if you want to bring attention to the view from the window, use subtle colors and a simple pattern.
