Video game reviews: New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)

A new Mario game was created that would be rather interesting for the Nintendo Wii. It would be known as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which would be the sequel to the DS game being New Super Mario Bros. The style would be in a 2D style but with the look of having some 3D like graphics. Honestly, it’s a game that would follow the format of previous games before hand, most notably like Super Mario World or even Super Mario Bros. 3.

The plot in this one involves Princess Peach celebrating her birthday and then Bowser Jr. along with the Koopa Kids capture the Princess and it’s up to Mario and the Gang to take care of business. His gang consists of Luigi and two Toads if you decide to play with four characters. It’s got a rather simple plot and nothing that could be added. Many Mario games over the years have had rather simple plots. It is no different.

It should be noted that with this one that there would be some new Power Ups brought into the Mario games. An Ice Flower would turn the character into an Ice character but default would be Ice Mario. There is also the Penguin suit that would turn him into Penguin Mario. Of course, there is the Mini Mushroom, which was in New Super Mario Bros. is one that is an interesting idea to try out. There is also the Propeller that will enable Mario to fly.

The game play does have the feel of Super Mario Bros. 3 in a sense. By that, that would mean that there are eight different theme worlds but has a bonus ninth world. There are various levels and there can be some alternate paths to the end of the level. There is also the Doom Ship in the game, which was from the Mario Bros. 3 game. In a first, it did have a Super Guide, which would have Luigi playing the stage from beginning to end. Of course, that’s just something to consider if struggling consistently and want to see how it’s done. It should be noted that unlike other Mario games in the past, this one you can have up to four players at the same time if you can keep track of who’s who.

Graphically, there isn’t much to say about it in that it is colorful and looks nice. Everything is fine the way it should be and nothing seems a bit out of place.

Overall, it’s actually a really good game. It’s one to get for the Wii if you like Mario games. It takes you back to the past but has some new Power Up items along the way. It’s a challenge and can keep you busy. The Super Guide is just what it is supposed to be, nothing fancy or special. It’s a game that is a must-have for the Wii.
