There are many good reasons to grow your own vegetables. Finances play a huge role in wanting to grow your own vegetables to save huge amounts on your grocery bill. Healthy eating and overall wellness are another great reason why many want to grow their own good-for-you vegetables.

One basic step for beginners to grow their own vegetable garden is to get the soil tested. Soil is the most basic and elemental part of successful gardening. You can get soil tested at your local cooperative extension office. They will inform you what nutrients need to be added to your soil as well as give you tons of helpful advice on gardening know-how.

Another basic for growing your own vegetables is to start small. There are a lot of choices when it comes to vegetable growing but vegetables are really easy to grow. If you're limited on space to begin with you can choose container gardening over the traditional method of gardening. Since it is also a matter of choice when it comes to vegetable gardening you only have to grow your favorites. You could grow a “garden salad,” garden by choosing a large container and planting tomatoes, lettuce and onions or cucumbers. You may just want to put all of these vegetables in separate smaller containers or just want to grow herbs in small containers to enhance your cooking's flavors. An entire garden in containers dedicated to just salsa items is a great choice for beginning gardeners.

Fertilizing your garden is important, although scary for many beginners. To have healthy, plant thriving soil one essential nutrient is nitrogen. Rotted leaves, grass clippings and earthworms are great sources of this needed soil material. Just cover the ground with any of these things wherever you plan on planting next year’s garden for really great soil.

Spending a little more on good garden tools is a very wise basic when it comes to veggie gardening. These more expensive planting tools will last you much longer than cheap tools. You should have a few necessary items such as gardening gloves, a rake, trowel and a spade.

You’ll love eating that first juicy red tomato and the satisfaction that comes with knowing you grew it yourself. You’ll also enjoy a healthier way of life and more overall wellness eating more nutritious vegetables. Just follow our basics of vegetable gardening and even a beginner can reap a fine harvest.
