How should we lead our children to God
It takes children no time to lose interest and disregard what they don't understand. It is our responsibility as parents to lead them to God, To do so,we must first educate them. It is best to do this as early in life as possible, as a child's faith is strong. In Mark 10:15, Jesus says, “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” We must instill the faith in our children while they are young so that it will create a foundation to carry them through the rest of their lives.
One way, perhaps the most important way, is to practice what we preach. We set examples for our children everyday, sometimes without even realizing what we are doing. If we do not have patience with our spouse, or compassion for our neighbor, our children will take note and follow in our footsteps. We must live in accordance with God's will if we expect the little ones to do the same.
Another way to guide our children to the Lord is to take them regularly to a church with a good Sunday school. When we want small children to learn arithmetic we send them to school. It is equally important that we place young children in a learning environment that will teach them Christianity on a level they can comprehend. Most Sunday schools are equipped with biblical literature that is written for children and adolescents.
Stimulating a child's interest in God can also be as simple as bringing attention to how the Bible's teachings apply to his or her own life. Children are self-absorbed by nature. The more they see God's word effect their world first hand, the more they will value it. If a child is having trouble with a bully at school, discuss how Jesus would handle the situation. If the child is being disobedient, explain why God asks that children obey their parents. We are all given daily opportunities to utilize God's word. Children simply need these opportunities pointed out to them.
Of course, we cannot leave the power of prayer out of the equation. How can we not pray for our children? We should ask that God be with them. We must trust that he will be, because we, too, must have the faith we ask of our sons and daughters.
