We all dread the day-or even hours- before a long trip when we have to pack. Many of us just grab clothes and shower stuff and shove it all in a bag, hoping we’ve packed enough to get us through the week. Though this may work for a hotel stay or when visiting friends who can loan you the things you forget, summer camp is a little different. When dealing with the outdoors, you want to be prepared.
If you aren’t sure what exactly to bring to camp, research it. Many summer camps will post a list of things to bring. You can also go on forums or blogs to find out what other people recommend. After you are registered at the camp, they will most likely send a welcome packet, which will include a "What to Bring" list. If you do not receive a list, you may call the camp to see what they recommend. Do the same to find out what not to bring to camp. This list will include valuables, weapons (pocketknives may count as a weapon) and electronics. The point of going to summer camp is to "unplug" from the world. You will be doing so many fun activities; you won’t need an ipod, cell phone or computer. On top of that, there is the risk that your electronic devices may get stolen, lost or damaged.
Obviously, you will need to bring additional items that are specific to you. Once you have a general list, add to it to make it your own. To hit everything, go through your daily routine starting from when you wake up. Think of all the items you use during each activity. For example: Wake up, brush teeth (toothbrush, floss, toothpaste), wash face (face wash, wash cloth, face lotion), brush hair (hairbrush, hair ties, hairspray, blowdryer), etc.
Try to make a list of your outfits too. That way, you won’t over pack and you’ll know how much room you will have. Plan your outfit according to what you will be doing that day. If you don’t get a tentative schedule with your welcome packet, call the camp and ask if there is one. You will at least know some of the activities you are doing, so plan the appropriate outfit. For example, if you are going hiking on day, you’ll want to pack a shirt made of breathable fabric, cargo pants and hiking shoes. Always pack extra socks and underwear. And, remember that you are camping. You do not need tons of make-up or tons of accessories.
Keep up to date on the weather and plan for the unpredictable. Although it is summer, you still may need long pants and a sweatshirt for cool nights. Always pack a poncho, which
