There are a variety of options if you are interested in a career in networking.  It is a hot field due to the increase of computer use by businesses.  You will like this career if you are comfortable working with computer hardware, enjoy constantly learning about new technology and are good at problem solving. Salaries offered in this field range from $45,000 to $106,000.  While these jobs are highly competitive, there will not be a shortage of these positions any time soon.

Network Administrator

A network administrator is responsible for overseeing a company’s computer network to ensure that it functions smoothly. They may customize networks by adding specialized hardware and software that is needed. The job may also include maintaining network security, developing an emergency system to back up a network server, setting up user IDs and passwords and directing network technician’s responsibilities. Network administrators should have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field. After formal education and training, a network administrator must keep up with constant changes in computer technology and update their knowledge base. A familiarity with network operating systems is also important. Average salary for a network administrator is $75,000.

Network Technician

The network technician (also called network engineer or network specialist) is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing and setting up the general hardware and software required in a network. This includes installing routers and switches to company standards. They may travel to specific sites to upgrade and support customer network related issues. Other duties may involve supporting help desk analysts and making recommendations for improving the current computer network. Due to frequent changing technology, network technicians always need to know the most current standards and terminology for local area networks (LANs). The minimum requirement for a network technician is an associate’s degree in network engineer. A Cisco or Microsoft certifications may be needed to qualify for certain positions. Completing a Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science would also benefit your career in this field. Trade schools (such as DeVry or ITT Tech) are other education options. Network technicians can expect an average salary of $45,000.

Network Computer Programmer/Analyst

A network computer programmer/analyst writes scripts, coding and software programs to help with network analysis. Scripts and codes are the instructions a computer uses to complete tasks and run software programs. Other responsibilities involve figuring out problems with the use of software tools (diagnostics) and monitoring utilities. They may also solve problems to make sure all computer devices work together properly (synchronization) and there is enough space to carry all data (bandwidth) throughout the network. A career in network computer programming and analysis requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline. A solid understanding of how computer networks work is also important. Depending on experience, a network computer programmer/analyst can earn $50,000 to $106,000 annually.
