Robaxin is the popular brand name of the prescription only generic drug Methocarbamol. It is used for short term symptomatic relief of muscle spasms. Because of potential for side effects, this drug is on the list for High Risk Medications in the elderly as well. This drug also acts as a central nervous system depressant.
Usually patients have to take 1.5g four times a day. In elderly dose will be reduced by your doctor. It comes in tablet form and whole tablet should be taken with a full glass of water.
Tablets should not be crushed without discussing your doctor. Gastro intestinal side effects can be alleviated by follwoing above habits.
Common gastro intestinal side effects are nausea, vomiting, and dyspepsia. Drowsiness is another common side effect, which can affect performance of skilled tasks such as driving. Effects of alcohol like drowsiness, and confusion are enhanced by Robaxin.
Hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions can occur with Robaxin. These include hives, swelling of lips (angioedema), and anaphylaxis. Symptoms of Anaphylaxis are shortness of breath, low blood pressure, generalized hives, and abdominal cramps. If these symptoms are present, emergency medical attention should be sought.
Few patients will get increased body temperature with Methocarbamol (Robaxin). This can be controlled with over the counter anti pyretics like acetaminophen. Some patients might complain headache. Few patients get dizzy with this medication.
Confusion is another important side effect that can affect elderly patients as well as patients with dementia. Memory loss can occur rarely with some patients.
Restlessness and anxiety can occur rarely. Very rarely patients can have seizures with Methocarbamol (Robaxin). Blurred vision and nasal congestion occur rarely.
Very rarely rashes, itchiness, can occur apart from hypersensitivity reactions. Some patients complain yellowish discoloration of the body due to cholestatic jaundice. White blood cell counts can be depleted in few patients taking Methocarbamol (Robaxin).
Doctors will prescribe cautiously Methocarbamol in severe hepatic impairment. Renal impairment is another caution.
Doctors will not prescribe Methocarbamol in epilepsy. Patients with myasthenia gravis should not take Methocarbamol. Doctors will not prescribe Methocarbamol in coma, pre coma, and in brain damage.
Potential drug interactions
Effects of Methocarbamol are enhanced by lithium and propranolol. Sedative effects are increased when taken with alcohol.
Pregnancy and breast feeding
Pregnant mother should not use this medication unless potential benefit outweighs the risks.This medication is present in milk. So manufacturer advices to avoid in breast feeding.
