Being a safe driver is no guarantee of safety.  In fact, given the statistics, if you haven't already been involved in a car accident, chances are one day you will be.  According to the partnered non-profit organizations Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute in 2008 there were 5.8 million police-reported traffic crashes in the U.S.; 37,261 people died in those accidents.

Safe driving is more than just a technique practiced behind the wheel: attitude and preparation are a big part of this practice.  Staying calm in the midst of traumatic circumstances can keep a bad situation from getting worse.  Knowing what to do beforehand can help keep you calm.   Read on for some tips on just what to do if the worst happens to you when you're driving.

Edmonds.com –- the pro-consumer automotive analysis web site recommends the following in the event of an automobile accident:

*   Keep an emergency kit in the car.  Pen & paper, important contact and health information, disposable camera, and a cell phone should be easily available.

*   If there are no serious injuries move the involved vehicles out of the way of traffic.  State laws and/or vehicle damage may prohibit this.

*   If the cars cannot be moved set out cones/flares/or triangles, turn on hazard lights, make sure everyone is buckled up and remain inside car until help arrives.

*   Exchange pertinent information with the other driver: name, address, phone number, insurance details.  Be polite but do not acknowledge/accept blame or responsibility for the accident.

*   Write out a complete description of accident scene and automobiles involved.

*   Photograph and document accident including any witness names and numbers if possible.

*   File an accident report.

*   Know what your policy covers

*   Contact lawyer.

Accidents happen and in the unlikely event that you find yourself involved in one knowing what to do next may afford you a little peace of mind.
