Allergies are reactions of the human immune system to any number of things in the environment. There can be a variety of symptoms ranging from annoying to extremely dangerous and life threatening. Common symptoms are sinus congestion, sinus drainage, throat irritation and itchiness, frequent throat clearing, sneezing, itchy eyes or ears, watery eyes, rashes, hives, difficulty breathing, asthma, wheezing, even gastrointestinal problems.

There are innumerable triggers for allergies and in order to treat them effectively, naturally or with prescription remedies, a person must be aware of what they are allergic to. The best way to find out is to have allergy testing done by a physician. Anyone with severe allergies or asthma should be under the care of an allergy/immunology doctor.

Fortunately, there are many natural ways to reduce chronic and less severe allergy symptoms

First of all, controlling the allergens in the patient's environment helps. The place to start is in the bedroom. If at all possible, eliminate carpet and rugs. These harbor dust mites. Also, eliminate stuffed animals in children's rooms. Purchase hypoallergenic pillows and cases for pillows and mattresses. Wash all bedding weekly in hot water, which will kill dust mites. If you must have carpet in the home, vacuum it at least once per week with a vacuum that is equipped with a HEPA filter. (It is also best to have the allergy sufferer out of the home when vacuuming is done because some dust mites will get stirred up). It is also important to vacuum or wash curtains regularly and vacuum furniture.

It is important to avoid time outdoors during windy weather and dry weather. If you are out, take a shower and change clothes as soon as possible to eliminate the allergens that have clung to you and your clothing. Never go to bed without washing your hair after being outdoors as the allergens will be transferred into your bedding for you to inhale.

If you live in a humid environment, a dehumidifier might be helpful. Also keep shower curtains and the bathroom in general as dry as possible and free of mold. Conversely, if you are in a dry, arid area you might consider a humidifier, especially in winter months.

Obviously, wherever you live, it is probably not a good idea to open the windows and allow allergen laden outdoor air to blow in.

There are other ways to naturally combat allergies as well:

Many people claim that honey, produced in their local area, relieves symptoms when taken daily (1 to
