I'm a sleepyhead in the morning so I've had to perfect a five minute makeup routine and, as I've been wearing makeup for more than thirty years now, I've had lot's of practice. The following routine should take no more than five minutes. I know this as I follow it six mornings a week.
Start with a clean, moisturised face. Wait at least a few minutes after moisturising before you apply foundation. This gives your moisturiser time to be absorbed into your skin, and reduces the risk of patchiness or flaking when you apply your base.
Foundation: work from the centre of your face outwards, using quick, light movements. A sponge applicator gives the best finish, but fingers are also fine if that is more comfortable for you to use. Solid compact foundations are ideal for quick application, but are too drying for some skins.
Mousse is a great alternative, and probably the easiest formulation to apply. I like Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. It’s really easy to apply and gives a soft, matte finish with good coverage.
• Always ensure foundation is blended in around your hair and jaw line. Take time to do this, no matter how rushed you are. Tidemarks don’t look good!
• Remember you don’t necessarily need to cover your entire face with foundation. If you have a good complexion but have some areas that need a little coverage (for example your T-zone) then just use foundation on that part of your face. Don’t worry about looking patchy. If foundation is blended properly this won’t be a problem.
• Foundation is not compulsory! If you have a good complexion a tinted moisturiser or a bit of concealer may be all you need.
Concealer: use to disguise blemishes, dark circles, blotches or anything else you want to hide. Cream concealer is easiest and quickest to apply, but dab it on lightly and blend well with foundation.
Concealer should always be used sparingly, using too much will result in a patchy looking face. Highlighters such as YSL Touche Eclat are very popular now, many people use them instead of concealers, particularly under eyes.
This can work if used carefully but, particularly in the under eye area, highlighters can look chalky and unnatural. Use them sparingly for best results.
Eyeshadow: my personal preference is for eye
