How to get in shape for the snowboarding season

by Paul Guardino

Created on: May 25, 2010

Put those swimsuits back in their drawer, winter is in the air and snowboarding is all you can think about.  You don’t want a repeat of last season. Sure, the first day went well—in fact, it went so well that you were too sore and tired to go out again.

Before you go riding again, you'll need to get out of the summer lounging routine. Forget expensive gym memberships and fancy exercise equipment. There are a ton of ways to get in shape for next snowboard season without spending a dime…

-Cardio-

Your lungs need to be in awesome shape for your trip.  Thinner air at higher altitude will make it harder to breathe for mild activities, let alone snowboarding.  If you haven’t been out and about in a while, now is the time.

Running – The cardio benefit of running is obvious.  Running also builds strength in the legs.  Be careful; start slow.  If you haven’t moved around for a long time, then start with walking and build your pace. The last thing you want is to be couch ridden all snowboard season due to a running injury.  Another thing to be conscious of: running isn’t always knee friendly, and you really need to save your knees.

Swimming – Swimming may be the ultimate solution to fitness in the off-season.  It’s warm, it’s sunny; so why not catch some rays, cool off in the pool, and train for next snowboard season all at the same time? Swimming is a low resistance way to build strength all-around while expanding your lungs.

Biking – Taking up bike riding might change your life.  Train your legs and lungs, travel long distances, and lessen your carbon imprint—if you care.

Hiking – Just because the snow melts doesn’t mean there’s nothing more to see or do at your local resort.  Hiking will keep you acclimated to higher altitude as you enjoy breathtaking views and excellent exercise.

Surfing – Surfing, skateboarding, and wakeboarding all emulate the movements of snowboarding, working many of the muscles you’ll need come snowboard season.  These can get somewhat expensive, but are equally as challenging and enjoyable as snowboarding.  There is no better way to play through the off-season, but be careful out there!

These are only a short list of ways to get your heart pumping and strengthen your lungs for your next snowboard trip.  In fact, making a habit of any of these activities could substitute for a workout
