The term gentleman is not just a word that defined courteous men in previous generations. Even though, throwing a jacket over a puddle of water or helping a lady off her horse many not be common actions taken by gentlemen in this day and age, there are still plenty of courteous and respectful things a man can do.
In some cases in this modern age, avoiding certain inappropriate actions can also be a sign of genuine gentlemanlike behavior. A real gentleman strives to maintain a few basic principles of courtesy.
Shows Self-Control
A modern day gentleman always strives to maintain composure even in difficult and unruly situations. A true gentleman avoids the opportunity to overreact and cause a dramatic scene. Regardless of circumstances, a real gentleman keeps a level head and reacts appropriately to situations. A gentleman never purposely draws unneeded attention to himself. He refuses to fight unless it is out of self-defense or is necessary to protect victims from harm and danger. A modern gentleman never loses his cool or reacts out of unwarranted emotion.
Speaks Politely
In this present age of frustration and disharmony at every turn, a gentleman refuses to swear or speak in vulgarities. It is not always easy, but a real gentleman never depends upon the use profanity as a means of intimidation or prestige. A gentleman speaks gently as his name suggests and refuses to initiate or respond with swear words or vulgar statements. Kind language accompanies a gentleman everywhere he goes. A modern day gentleman never engages in road rage, bar brawls or inappropriate jokes.
Avoids Spitting
As rare as it might seem, a gentleman avoids the urge to spit. A gentleman sees spitting as an unnecessary habit that is gross and unattractive. As a result, he avoids spitting even when he wishes he could do so. Spitting is not a sign of masculinity for a genuine gentleman. If there is a genuine need to spit, a gentleman always does that in private where no one else can see.
Displays Courtesy
Most importantly, a gentleman behaves politely in public and in private. Refined gentlemen avoid rude and suggestive words and actions around both men and women. Specifically around a woman, a gentleman offers polite and courteous words that warrant a smile and thanks. Yelling, laughing loudly and making rude suggestions and innuendos have no place within the heart of a polite gentleman.
Walks like a Man
A modern gentleman walks with proper posture and stature. A gentleman never slumps or shuffles from one place to another. He keeps his head held high, in a non-egotistical way, and walks with purpose in each step. A real gentleman carries himself with masculine grace and ease. He is well kept and fashionable without appearing to be vain or prideful.
In conclusion, modern gentlemen still exist in today’s society. Their polite behavior, self-controlled actions and honorable mannerisms make them a rare, yet highly appreciated male role models. Gentlemen make courtesy and respect attainable attributes in a world that has often forgotten the elegance of a real man.
