Reflections: Does happily ever after exist?

Is Happily Ever After Possible?

Not the happily ever after as told in fairy tales, but yes Virginia happily ever after is possible. The fairy tales lead you to believe that by marrying the handsome prince, he will make you happy.

No other person can or will make you happy. You have to find happiness within yourself first. The fairy tales also tell you this, but most of us just wait for the ending, and don’t really pay attention to what is going on, all through the story.

Cinderella loved animals; she was friendly to everyone and everything. Cinderella had to do all the work in the house, plus take all the grief her stepmother and stepsisters put her through during the story, even though she went through all this bad stuff she still sang and smiled throughout all of it. The stories of Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty were much the same they were already happy no matter what problems they had. The relationships they started with a prince just added more happiness to their already happy lives.

Our own story can be compared to a fairy tale, we have many happy memories, while growing up, and unfortunately we tend to dwell on all the bad things instead of the good. We end up doing the same through our teen years and adult years, we never realize how wonderful our lives really are until it too late to really enjoy and appreciate all we’ve gone through.

Your spouse asks how your day was, you don’t tell him about the young boy who opened the door for you at the office, but the jerk who came in and ripped into you, you will tell him about that episode, nor will you tell him about the woman who helped you pick up your papers that you dropped when the copy boy ran into you coming back from lunch. Now him and the spilt brief case you’ll remember.

Most of us just forget how to smile when things go bad. As a society we all tend to concentrate on the bad, we have heard too much of the bad that goes on in the world. You pick up the paper or watch the evening news it’s loaded with killings, robberies, and people who have done other people wrong.

We don’t hear or see the boy who helped his neighbor clean out his rain gutters because the neighbor was older or was hurt so he couldn’t climb the ladder.

Through the years, we have forgotten how to sing our sorrows and troubles away. We have forgotten to make time for great family fun. We have forgotten to laugh with our spouses and play games with our children. We have forgotten how to spread our love around to others. We need to thank God for the love ones we have in our lives each and every day. I believe we can all live happily ever after; we just need to remember how to smile and learn to laugh at the stupid things that happen all around us everyday.

We also need to remember some of us may never find our prince, or our Cinderella, but that is okay, you don’t need them to be happy within.
