Lymph nodes are found throughout the body, and are a vital weapon for the immune system, as they help the body to recognise and fight off infections, and other threats to the smooth running of your body. Sometimes, one or more of the lymph nodes becomes swollen, usually as the result of an infection or fluid retention.
This condition is commonly known as 'swollen glands,' and it can be very uncomfortable. However, there are a number of natural treatment options for swollen glands. Massage the area with warm castor oil to improve circulation, and then apply alternate hot and cold compresses for around 20 minutes. This will help to reduce the swelling and alleviate discomfort.
Reduce your salt intake, and drink a cup or two of strong black coffee or tea. The caffeine will act as a diuretic, and help to level out your body's water content. And make sure you get plenty of rest. Some underlying condition has caused the swollen glands, and your body needs to recover from it.
Several drinks are recommended for the treatment of swollen glands. Try drinking hot water with fresh lemon juice and honey first thing in the morning. Commonly, it's the lymph nodes in the neck which are prone to swelling, and this results in a sore throat. Lemon juice and honey are well known treatments for this condition. Herbal teas such as chamomile, ginger and peppermint are also effective. If you can tolerate the strong flavour, chewing a piece of ginger is even more effective than drinking it as a herbal tea.
Apple cider vinegar is also effective, either as a drink in hot water, or used neat as a gargle. Gargling with a tespoon of salt in a small cup of water will also ease discomfort in the throat, and strong black tea used as a gargle will also ease your sore throat.
Sore throats are often most painful at night. To ensure a good night's sleep, heat some milk and add a little black pepper and turmeric. Drink this each night before going to bed until the swelling subsides and the throat pain eases. You may ot feel like eating much, especially with a painful throat, but try to include more vitamin C and garlic in your diet.. This will give a natural boost to your immune system and help your body to fight any underlying infection.
Swollen lymph nodes, or swollen glands, can be a painful, acute condition, but there are lots of things you can do to ease the symptoms, without resorting to drugs. If the problem persists for more than a few days, consult your doctor, as there may be a more serious cause for your condition.
