Is it possible to know another human being in such a way that you know, even if they don't, that they are making a mistake? Is it possible to know someone and to love them in such a way that you know and love yourself? Is it wrong to think otherwise?
To love someone for your entire adult life, see them grow and change; see them become who they are and see that they are not done. To see the possibilities of a life together and see their amazing capabilities unfold. Is this not what a romance is? Is this not what makes two people not only friends but lovers? Is this enough to hold two people who obviously love each other together? How could a future not exist?
Questions, so many questions. We as a generation live for the here and now, instant gratification. Patience is no longer a virtue, but a hindrance. Facing obstacles are no longer necessary when you can just not do it at all. In certain circumstances it may be necessary to stop or give up, leave, but is it always the best answer? It is easy to do what makes us happy in the now but will that really be what will make us happy in the end? It may make the moment better but what about the life or the people in that life that is affected?
Love is such a difficult word. Other languages have many different words that describe various ways we love each other but in Americanized English there is but one word. LOVE. Such a tiny words to sustain so much weight, hope and hurt that we put upon it. I love many people in many different ways and show it in just as many different ways. I have said "I love you" to people I didn't really care for in the way that they wanted me to and I have heard those words spoken to me when its not what I wanted to hear. Its not that the words were untrue, just not heard or spoken the same way they were meant to be.
So the question remains, do you continue to hold on and wait until all realize that they would have made a mistake? Or do you let go and not look back? Does love conquer all? Can a kiss make everything right again?
I guess I should have said that I have just finished watching the series finale of Mad About You. I know its corny but its one show that I have never been able to relate to until I was over 25; its also one of the few comedies of the 1990's that had a satisfying ending to its series. The show was not cancelled with out an ending and the ending fit the show. Seinfeld was the same; the ending fit the feel of the series. You may be reading this wondering what does this have to do with anything, but after having watched four hours of this comedy I have come to feel for these characters and cheer them on to a happy ending, even though I all ready knew what it was. It was as satisfying as staying up late reading an amazing book that I have read several times over. All be it, if I was reading I would not have been able to feed the baby, give him a bath, make dinner and do the dishes, but the sentiment is the same.
As in great literature, I am reminded that maybe, just maybe, there are happy endings after all and people do come out of bad circumstances stronger, closer. That somewhere couples still love and accept one another for their faults and their achievements. Men don't leave, women don't stop being nice and children turn out okay for all the trouble. Its nice to be reminded that its possible to not like someone every minute of every day but that does not mean that you don't stop loving them. I need to believe that trust and loyalty are just not words and that they mean something even if its just in a sitcom.
