Essays: Rape

There is a stigma attached to rape that is causing the victims to be tormented again and again. 1 in 6 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. It is said that a woman in South Africa has a better chance of getting raped than learning to read. A teenage girl in the United Arab Emirates reported being gang raped by six mean and was arrested for fornication because she admitted to pre-marital sex. And in the United States only 6% of rapists will spend one day in jail.

These are disgusting and mind blowing statistics. In Africa a civil war has been raging for as long as I’ve been alive. Most young men and boys are recruited into the army to fight; they are given guns, drugs, and the right to rape. This is war, they say.  I’ve watched countless documentaries on Africa, and one that stands out the most was directed by an American woman who went to Africa to focus on the topic of rape. When she told the women she was interviewing that she was raped in America they asked how long the war had been going on. She stated that there wasn’t a war at that time, and they were confused as to why she was assaulted.

In Africa babies are raped, when I say babies I mean infants that can’t even walk. The rapid spread of AIDS in the country doesn’t detour the violent acts against women. It makes them search for what they call “the cure for AIDS” deemed to be virgins and children. This is the face of war in Africa. What is the excuse in America?

Like I’ve said I’ve watched countless documentaries on Africa, but I also follow rape cases in America. Rape, in America, they say is hardly ever about sex. It’s about control. It’s about anger. It’s about revenge. I agree that those are reasons for Rape, but entitlement is also a reason, especially in date rape cases.

What disgusts me most about Rape in America is the false reports. A woman wants to get back at a man, a parent is upset about their daughter losing it to the wrong guy and the wrong age, a woman regrets her decision they cry Rape. This is a serious allegation that ruins lives. The lives of the accused and the lives of those that are actually Raped and don’t report it due to the scrutiny they are put under to be sure they are not lying. 60% of rapes go unreported.

No one wants to talk about it. It’s an act that is devastating because of its cruelty. When a person is raped, their body is not only abused but their mind is also
