Love is the last thing Technician Andrew Harlan expected to encounter while on a covert mission to discover the truth behind the rumors of a plot to disrupt centuries of unimpeded time travel. Confident in the his emotionless Technician skills and self-imposed objectivity, Harlan accepts the challenge, only to learn that time travel has a way of twisting fate in unpredictable ways. Especially when a beautiful woman becomes involved and all of Eternity seems to be plotting against him. Harlan soon learns that time travel is a dangerous adventure with unexpected barriers and lost centuries as he rages against the powers that control Eternity.

Intelligent and self-confident, Harlan possess all the mental traits that have led to his high-status among his peers. Unfortunately, success always caries a price, as he is shunned by others and eventually surrenders to ambition of his own making. He is naturally suspicious of the motives of others, even his superiors, as he grapples with mind-numbing calculations of probabilities, outcomes, success or failure. One thing is certain, however. Andrew enjoys his isolation from reality, but unexpectedly, small cracks of light begin to appear in the darkness of life in Eternity from a surprising source.

In The End Of Eternity, Isaac Asimov takes us up and down in time as he artfully spins a story of time travel and the paradoxes of time itself.  This is science fiction written by the master and is one of the best ever. Asimov doesn't just take the reader on a journey through ordinary time, either. He takes us into the mind of one that loves time without understanding the paradox or the danger of human meddling with natural events. A splendid story with clues, surprises and twists, Asimov has once again displayed the genius of imagination, bending space-time into reality for our joyful benefit.

The paradoxes of time travel are well-known among avid science fiction writers and readers alike. Time travel has been the grist in the mill of many a great story and film, and yet only through the genius of Isaac Asimov have we been able to catch a glimpse of the true nature of bending the will of time to human whimsy. This is serious stuff for not only science fiction lovers, but also for scientist and, as Asimov makes a strong statement on, sociologists.

As far a science fiction books go, The End of Eternity isn't overly large. The story is straightforward and moves the reader along at a dizzying rate. Despite its brevity, only 18 chapters, however, the book contains far more wisdom and insight into the dangers and unintended consequences of tinkering with time. Like all of Asimov's wonderful books, The End of Eternity is definitely a must read book and worthy of collection.
