What it means to be addicted to the Internet

Being addicted to the internet means that you cannot live without the use of your internet service. In all honesty, you won’t really die from not having internet service, but it will feel like you are dying. Addiction is something that we are tempted with so badly that we get nervous and cranky when we have to do without it. If you have had to go without internet for a day or so, you will find out how addicted you really are to it. You will do anything to just get on and check you “stuff” out.

We spend so much time on the internet in our lives that we don’t know how to react when we don’t have service. It shows mostly when the internet service goes down due to a storm or when we go away and the place we are visiting doesn’t have access. We begin to go through withdrawals because we rely so heavily on it. We look up things like where restaurants are or for directions to and from someplace. In fact, we rely on the internet for pretty much everything that we do. The few people that don’t have internet access wouldn’t have a clue as to why we get so edgy over not having access to it.

Internet addiction means that you find it hard to deal with everyday life without accessing the internet at least once a day. Most people access the internet several times a day and don’t really think of it as an addiction. There are even those of us so addicted to the internet that we buy laptops so that we can sit on our couch to watch television while we get on the internet. That is a pretty strong addiction. Those who don’t understand that type of addiction to the internet think we that do have lost our minds. The truth is, the internet is one of the most harmless addictions there is. As long as you take care of the things in your everyday life, there is no reason that anyone should worry about how much time you spend on the computer.

There is a point that internet addiction is a bad thing. If it takes up so much of your life that you forget to do the things that you need to do, it’s a bad thing. If you find yourself so involved with the fantasy of social networking sites like FaceBook that you forget to talk to the real people in your life, you are too addicted to the internet and it could be bad for your family life. Other than that, you are doing something fairly harmless. You may want to pry your fingers away from the keyboard every now and then but there is no reason to give it up completely.
