As we age, our skin loses moisture and elasticity. As such, to care for your skin as you get older, you should moisturize your face, body, hands and feet. For each there are specific moisturizers available and one should not be confused with the other. However, taking care of skin involves more than just moisturizing.
- To start off with, avoid hot water. Hot water dries out skin. Rather shower with warm water and wash your face with tepid or even cold water. Not only is the cold water better for your skin, it will promote good blood circulation.
- Never use soap on your face and body. Rather use a cleansing lotion or a gentle foaming wash. Try using hydrating body wash in the shower.
- After washing, pat your face with toner. Toner will refresh your face and restore the pH-balance.
- Finish by liberally applying moisturizer. This should be done every single day.
- Exfoliate once a week to get rid of dry skin cells. Apply the scrub to your fingertips and gently work into skin in a circular motion.
- Follow up with a mask. Masks are available at the cosmetic counter, or you can make your own with a mixture of avocado, banana and honey or yochert.
- Cleanse your face before bedtime, follow up with toner and finish by applying night cream. Night cream is much richer than day moisturizer and will hydrate your skin while you sleep.
- When selecting a moisturizer, pay attention to the ingredients by reading the label. Avoid products such as lavender, lemongrass, lime and fragrances. You might want to be careful with Retinol too. Test a little of the product on the inside of your arm and wait twenty four hours. If you develop a rash or itchy skin, this product is obviously not for you.
- Protect your skin from the elements. In summer seek sun protection with sun block with a high SPF factor and wear glasses to protect your eyes and the skin around them. In winter wear gloves to protect your hands from the cold and wind. Apply lip balm all year round.
- Eat healthy and be sure to include plenty of fruit and veggies in your diet. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
- To treat age spots and wrinkles talk to a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.
- Finally, get enough sleep and avoid stress. This may be easier said than done, but avoiding stressful situations goes a long way.
