For over two hundred years America has been a predominately, Christian, family oriented society. Americans value God and family above all else. But, when asked to give gay couples the same privileges afforded straight couples, they lose their humanity.
When President Bill Clinton got caught having sex with an intern, (adultery), Americans were not outraged about the sex they were outraged that he lied. America seemed to agree that his sex life was none of their business. Many fellow Americans felt that as an American, they have the right to do what they chose to do, in the privacy of their own homes. No one wants the government to start regulating their sex lives. You may not agree, but in my opinion, Americans have a double standard. This double standard implies that as long as you do not advertise your sex life, they do not care what you do. The second you tell them you are attracted to someone of the same sex, you give up your right to have children, a spouse, and sometimes even medical insurance.
Most gay persons live very productive lives just like any other American. The difference is their sex life. All they ask is that society allow them the same privileges that heterosexual couples enjoy. They want to be able to raise children, own property, get married and be recognized as a couple. It seems that America has forgotten the very things it banned together to protect: Life, Liberty, Justice and Freedom were some of those things. America joined together, after the Civil War, to give all people equal rights, no matter what sex, color, or gender they happened to be born. Consequently, The Bill of Rights was written to insure that all people were given equal rights. It does not specify only heterosexual sexual people. Amendment XIV, section 1 states,
No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or
immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person
of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person
within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Gay couples are asking to be given rights guaranteed to all persons by The Bill of Rights, whom they have sex with should not be a consideration. As a humanitarian, it is difficult to say that gay couples should not be allowed to enjoy all the rights and privileges of their fellow Americans.
