Writers are often told it is very important to make certain you sit down and write something every day. The thought may be that by writing each day a writer gets better at what they do and this is enough. But this type of regimen is also useful and important in other ways. Writing every day can be a means towards changing your life.
Writing As Perspective: Writers are expressing a perspective on their subject matter. By writing about that perspective every day a writer can't help but begin to examine all sides of their thinking. You may begin to change perspective and look at things from a different point of view. Continuing to write will help you to investigate different outlooks on the same subject matter and this can make your writing more rich and detailed. It also teaches you to be flexible in your perspective throughout your life.
Writing As Focus: Writing every day causes us to focus and concentrate intensely on the task at hand. This is something that can impact every area of our lives. When we learn to be less disjointed and fragmented in our approach to what we are doing we are able to work with more efficiency. Efficiency is important for the writing process as well as for almost any sort of task we undertake.
Writing As Discipline: Writing every day exercises your commitment to discipline yourself. It isn't easy to sit down and demand of yourself to produce a certain number of pages each day. As with anything, the process can seem repetitious and after a while we feel burned out or as if we want to do something else with our time. However, if we discipline ourselves to push through these superficial reactions and get down to work, we usually end with good results. Developing the facility to discipline yourself is a valuable lesson that carries over into other important aspects of your life.
Writing As Meditation: Writing every day can serve as a daily meditation practice. As we write we remove ourselves from the world we're in and enter the world of our writing. Taking that time away from reality to focus ourselves elsewhere can serve as a meditation and help us gain clarity and insight. This type of awakening and awareness can change our lives in significant ways and help us to be less stressful and more accepting.
Writing every day can serve to change our lives in several different ways. This creative practice can also help us look at our lives as creative endeavors. Though we may not initially believe the possible results, if we make sure we write every day we will begin to see how important it can be.
