If you are a leader looking for success and recognition in your organization, the ability to effectively delegate is a necessity for your success. The best way to define delegation is that it is a process where a manager gives responsibility and authorizes an individual or individuals to accept the responsibility for completing an assigned task. The biggest reason for a manger to delegate tasks is that it frees the manager to accomplish more tasks and increase their productivity.
Employees will not respect managers that retain total control and responsibility and refuse to delegate any of their responsibilities to their employees. Inexperienced managers sometimes tend to resist delegating work to to others. The experienced manager will recognize that successful managers learn to delegated effectively to increase their ability to be more productive and accomplish many more tasks instead of trying to do it all.
When managers delegate to employees they are helping the employees to become more skilled and increase their productivity. Managers that delegate tasks to their employees are teaching the employees additional skills to make them more successful at work. The key is also selecting which individuals should be provided with the opportunity to increase their responsibility and have the greatest chance of being successful.
The manager should be delegating only projects that they are personally responsible for. Managers cannot delegate tasks that they are not directly responsible for. By delegating responsibility for a task, the manager is letting the employee know that they are trusted and valued as an employee. When managers are collaborating effectively together with their employees, quality and productivity will increase. The experienced manager will be more willing to understand that trust means giving up some control, verses the inexperienced manager that will often find it more difficult to give up control.
In order to successfuly delegate, the manager must match the task to the right employee. Keep in mind that if a task or project involves confidential information or is a questionable project full of controversial issues, this should not be delegated. The goal of delegation is to increase the volume of work that is being done with quality and keeping it a win win for both the employee and the manager.
If a manager feels some reluctance by an employee to accept additional responsibility but recognizes that they have the capability of completing the task, the manager should be willing to ensure the employee they will provide them with support when needed. Everyone is inexperienced and will remain that way unless additional opportunities are given to potentially talented staff. Success in completing a project or process will motivate an employee and help a employee to realize their potential. Failing to delegate is a missed opportunity to find the most talented employees in an organization.
When you effectively delegate, it benefits both the employees and the organization. It also enhances the success of the manager. There are many good reasons to delegate tasks and the smart informed manager will utilize all the positive benefits of delegating effectively.
