Party distinctions blurring in UK: What happened to core ideology?

As the parties of the left and right move towards the centre, voter choice becomes ever less of an issue. This is reflected in ever lower turnouts for elections. Basically, what we know vote for is the party which we consider to be the best administrator of public funds and the economy.

This is unfortunate as it stifles public debate. For example, parties on both sides of the divide wish to be tough on crime - hence, the prison population rises inexorably and those voters who would rather look at alternative ways of tackling crime have no voice. This lack of choice is now prevalent in most aspects of society: education, health, foreign affairs, taxation etc.

Thus, democracy has developed into a stagnant complacency - it is an environment where ideology has no part to play.
