We cannot expect to have a good neighbor without first being one. We do not get to choose our neighbors and we will spend many years in close proximity with them. We will have a greater quality of life if we build a solid, trustful and friendly relationship with our neighbors.
Here are a few qualities of a good neighbor:
~Respect
A good neighbor will respect his/her property by taking care of the exterior of the home and the presentation of the lawn. Keeping the lawn in good condition will show consideration for the property and increase the value of the entire neighborhood.
Showing mutual respect for your property will create an atmosphere of community and this will benefit everyone on the block. Proper maintenance is mandatory to being a good neighbor.
~Friendliness
Always acknowledge the presence of your neighbor. When you notice your neighbor driving down the street or walking out to retrieve their mail, wave and say hello. If you have a chance, comment on the lovely flowers or the rich shade of grass in their yard. Give a sincere compliment when possible.
If your neighbor is struggling with a project, offer a helping hand. The favor will be returned and this will build a neighborly friendship.
~Support
When your doorbell rings and the neighbor's child is standing there, selling candy bars for his/her sport team, always reach in your pocket and buy from them. Remember, this works both ways and it shows your support.
If you hear of a personal crisis in the life of your neighbor, be prepared to offer support. It could be a meal or an offer to care for their property if necessary. Be considerate of the situation and don’t hesitate to reach out. In a crisis, it is always best to offer support and assistance. Do not take it personally if your help is politely refused. You may not have all the details and since you offered, there may be a time they need you to assist.
~General Good Neighbor Qualities
A good neighbor will always respect your privacy.
A good neighbor will not gossip or speak badly to others.
A good neighbor will keep the noise down when having a party and clean up the surrounding property.
A good neighbor is happy to loan a cup of sugar or an 8” ladder.
A good neighbor always returns loaned items.
Having good neighbors gives you a great sense of security. Look out for each other and this will make your neighborhood a safe place to live. Do this without being nosy or aggressive. Be respectful to them and they will surely be respectful to you.
You have chosen to live in a neighborhood rather than live in an isolated area. Because of this decision, you have an opportunity to build lifelong friendships with your neighbors. Remember we can only expect to be treated well if we in turn treat those around us with respect. Building a good relationship with our neighbors, also builds a good community.
