The mention of ice cream conjures up wonderful childhood memories. I am from a large family, and looking back, although our upbringing was humble, to me it was very rich. One of the reasons for that is that food was a great highlight for the family. My mom was a wizard when it came to creations in the kitchen especially on Sundays. For us kids, the main event was the dessert. My dear mom had the ability to make ice cream from scratch. And, because there were so many mouths to feed, she could only afford to make one flavor ice cream; and that was 'good old' chocolate.
As a result, for years chocolate flavor has been my favorite. It was made with some of most wholesome ingredients. Back then, no one knew about cholesterol. The milk and butter used were the real deal, no low fat or skim milk. Of course, these ingredients turned out the most creamy and smooth texture of chocolate ice cream I could asked for. Also, once in a while, my mom would toss in some type roasted nut, sometimes peanuts or almonds which provided a very crunchy finish. It was clock work, every Sunday evening at 6 p.m. my mother would serve us the most delicious and refreshing chocolate ice cream and jello. Of course, I did not care for slippery concoction called jello; all I desired was my share of chocolate delight.
Becoming an adult, I still crave my flavor ice cream on a Sunday afternoon. However, I make do and rely on 'Mr. Tom & Jerry' to satisfy my needs. Recently, a good friend introduced me to an ice cream haven. Peole come here near and far just to partake of their cool and sweet calorie laden food of various flavors. On my first visit, I was very surprized to behold the long lines wrapped around this establishment all for the sake of securing their share of ice cream. While waiting in line, I became a little impatient. Afterall, I could have continued my relationship with Tom and Jerry.
When It was my turn to be served I was offered samples of different flavors. They all melted on my tongue and certainly whet my palette. Suddenly I realized the reason for the throngs of people. As I viewed the showcase, I observed the various flavors of chocolate. Some were mixed with butter pecans, strawberries and even almonds. I requested the flavor of a couple samples of chocolate just to get my taste buds ready for the main event. Without a doubt, this carried me back to my childhood days.
I was oblivious to others around me. I was in my own chocolate world. I snapped back to reality and chose a mixed double scoop of almond and butter pecan chocolate flavor. I was a happy camper. I sensed others surrounding me were looking intently at me, but I did not care. I was in chocolate haven. My mom would be proud of my choice.
