What to look for when hiring a plumber

by Joe Brooks

What should you look for when hiring a plumber? It depends on your plumbing needs, to an extent. But certain things are basic, and should always be a part of your plumber shopping plan.

When you are thinking of hiring a plumber you should look for a true professional. While doing your own repairs and remodeling can be a good thing, and your friend down the street is a great guy and always willing to help, in a serious plumbing emergency or when considering major repairs and remodels, a real professional plumber is needed to do the job right.

You plumber of choice should have a well-established business with a good local reputation. You can and should ask for references. It is also a good idea to get the opinions of your friends and family, as they have had plumbing problems too and can help steer you toward a good reliable plumbing contractor. You will want to look for premises that indicate a qualified professional that cares about their reputation. The plumber you choose may also have a website that showcases their services and makes contacting them easy.

When you get in touch with the plumbing company, you should expect to be treated with courtesy and respect. You should look for clear explanations of services offered and solutions to your plumbing problems. The billing should be clearly explained, estimates should be complete and clear, and warranties and guaranties should be available.

You have a right to ask about the reliability of the people that will be coming into your home. You should also question their practices as to protective covering during and cleanup after the job is done. The plumber should correct the current problem and prevent future ones, not leave a mess in their wake.

When discussing repairs, you should know if the parts and tools needed for the job will be on the truck with the workers. You should not have to wait around while someone runs for ordinary plumbing fixtures. A qualified professional will be prepared with parts and the expertise required to handle your plumbing problem.

You want to find out if the plumber has experience in the kind of work you need done. A plumber that specializes in emergency drain clogs and leak repairs may not be qualified to handle a major remodel. A service that mostly offers remodeling and new construction may be neither willing nor able to respond to your midnight plumbing emergency.

Find out if the plumber has all the equipment needed to do the job. If you have a drain clog that is beyond your reach, you should ask if the plumber you are considering has modern camera equipment or other diagnostic tools needed to find the problem without digging up your premises unnecessarily. If major excavation is needed, do they have the required heavy equipment available?

In all ways, when looking to hire a plumber, you should remember that you have a right to expect top-quality service. A plumber's business is a personal one, installing and servicing the fixtures that you and your family depend on for health and comfort. You should settle for nothing less than a qualified professional plumbing contractor.
