Mom says "go play outside"
We dig tunnels in the dirt
Fill them with water
The ground is thirsty
Minnows in the ditch
Occupy my time
Crawdads, frogs and lightning bugs
Fun to catch and hold
The sticks, clay and dirt are my toys
My imagination keeps me busy
As the sun goes down
Shadows are my friends
Hunger moans inside me
As I haven't eaten today
A slice of cheese on a piece of bread
My meal for the day
Still I don't realize what is missing
Just know my tummy hurts
I see the tears in Mommy's eyes
They rush right down her face
The weather's getting colder now
We're trying to stay warm
When I wake up in the morn
There's ice between my sheets
Mom is crying harder now
She looks hopeless and so sad
But she grabs her tattered Bible
And says a faithful prayer
