The no-win situation of needing experience to get a job, and a job to get experience

Nearly all of us have experienced the frustration of reading the help wanted advertisements and seeing what seem to be unattainable credentials for securing a job.  Advertisements may state very clearly "x number of years required".  This may seem like a no win situation of needing experience to get a job and needing a job to get experience. However, there are some ways that this can be overcome if you are a bit creative and determined.

Offer a trial period - While most positions have a period called a "probationary" period where a company can let you go without any reason, you can "jump the gun" and offer an even shorter probationary period.  Offer to work for a full two week period at a reduced rate of hourly pay while the company gets to know you and evaluate your skills. This is often a good option and while it may not always work, some companies are willing to try.  Unless you offer this however, most companies will not suggest it.

Volunteer work - Contact organizations in your community who may be in need of the services that you are capable of providing.  While many people feel that volunteering means just giving your talents away for free, volunteering can lead to paying jobs. Volunteering your services allows you to network with a larger group of people which increases the possibility that someone will be willing to pay for the services you can offer. In addition, you can add that experience to your resume.

Networking - One way that you can help the no-win situation of needing experience to get a job and a job to get the experience is through networking.  This can be done by joining local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and other organizations.  Many of these organizations have small businesses as members and some may be looking for assistance.  You may be able to network into a part time position which could eventually lead to full time work.

Business listings - New business owners are often looking for people who do not have a lot of experience for the sole reason that they tend to not command as high a salary as their experienced peers. Contact your local town or city hall for a listing of new business registrations.  Contact them with a cover letter and your resume. Be professional, courteous and sound excited about the potential opportunity of working with a start up business.

Summary

These are just a few ways that you can consider to help overcome the no-win situation of needing experience to get a job, and a job to get experience.  Your creativity and flexibility will be one of the best tools you have to beat the no-win situation of needing experience to get a job, and a job to get experience.
