I hardly ever watch television, but last night i tuned in and watched the repeat of a new television series, 'Human Trafficking' on Sky Three. What an enthralling programme. I was fixed to my seat from the time it came on till the time it finished, afraid that i would miss a bit.
The show begins with a young girl, in her teens, jumping out of the window of a mans room so she won't have to give him sexual favours. Immediately after seeing this i was, and i'm sure many others, hooked.
The show then focuses on two russian girls, who are completely different, but both end up being trafficked to the United States and then hired out as prostitutes. You see both girls lives leading up to their arrivals in the U.S. One of the girls is sixteen and wishes to leave Russia in order to make a better life for herself. She auditions for what she thinks is a modelling agency that she can travel the world with and gets the job, unfortunately its not that type of job.
The other woman has a young daughter and works all the hours she can in a bar. She falls for a guy and he invites her on holidays with him in Vienna. She too is shipped to the U.S to sell her body.
The programme was so realistic. I cried during several parts and once nearly vomited. It really does hit home to the public that this type of thing really does happen. Children being sold to men for sex. It made me really feel for the people that this has happened to, as i can only put myself in their shoes, and imagine what they must have gone through. It must be really difficult for the families they leave behind. Never knowing what has happened to them or never being able to find them.
What a great programme to educate, not only children, but adults aswell about the dangers of going away without telling anyone where your going. Untill i watched this programme i didn't know that this kind of thing even happened. Now i know i;m disgusted! I know the harshness of the programme has definitely scared me, and i hope it will do the same to many others. The people who organise Human Trafficking are pure evil. No woman should be forced to do that. It's not only the victims whos lives are destroyed by human trafficking, it's their families aswell.
What a brilliant programme and i definitely will be tuning again next week.
