Web search: Why Google's competitors can't catch up

Created on: May 14, 2010

The internet search website, Google, is used by millions of people all over the world.  But why?  Why can't other websites such as Ask.com, MSN, and Bing catch up with Google and gain the same popularity as the web giant?  They seem to offer the same thing as Google, but they have never come to the point where Google is now.  Google has become the primary website for internet searching for many reasons, such as functionality, features, and fame.

First off, Google is a very easy website to use.  When you go to Google.com you are presented with a simple box where you type in what you are looking for and then buttons where you can hit "Search".  When people are in a hurry or trying to save time, using a clean, easy search engine can make a difference.  The results that Google returns are usually quite accurate based on your search terms.  Google makes it incredibly easy for anybody to search the web and find exactly what they are looking for.

Secondly, Google has many other features available other than just searching the web.  In addition to searching for websites, pictures and videos, one can also read the news, use the Google translator, search for shopping items, and also use Google maps.  Google maps is also quite popular due to the street-view feature which allows you to put yourself into wherever you are looking up, as if you are driving down the street.  You can also download and use the program, Google Earth, for free.  Google also has G-Mail, in which users can use to create an e-mail account through Google.

Last, but definitely not least, Google's competitors can't catch up because Google is famous.  When Google came onto the internet scene, it quickly gained a good reputation for being an accurate and useful search engine.  Once people began to really use the website, Google pretty much became the standard for web searching.  For example, due to the popularity of Google, whenever somebody wants to search for something on the internet, they usually say, "I'll Google that."  The world "Google" has now practically become a verb in our world.  Because Google has become so popular, it's competitors just can't really catch up with such a widely used site.

The competitors of Google will seemingly never catch up to where the colossal website is today.  In conclusion, Google is so far ahead primarily due to its functionality, features, and fame.
