This article includes the conjugation of the Simple Tenses (Indicative) for the verb “odiar.”
The Spanish verb “odiar” belongs to the First Conjugation type, that is, those verbs which infinite ends in –ar.
Remember Spanish verbs are categorized in three types:
- Infinitives ending in –ar (first conjugation type),
- Infinitives ending in –er (or econd conjugation type) and
- Infinitives ending in –ir (third conjugation).
This corresponds to the examples: “amar” (to love), “beber” (to drink) and “vivir” (to live).
The verb “odiar” (to hate) is a regular verb. This means that its conjugation follows the model of regular verbs belonging to the first conjugation (that is, those infinitives ending in –ar).
Before starting with this verb conjugation, there are two important things the student has to learn and understand:
1. Personal pronouns. The Spanish personal pronouns are:
For the singular:
Yo (I)
Tu’ (you) – singular, informal)
E´l (He)
Ella (She)
Usted (you – singular, formal)
And for the plural:
Nosotros (We - masculine)
Nosotras (We - feminine
)Vosotros (You – plural, informal)
Vosotras (You – plural, feminine)
Ellos (They – masculine)
Ellas (They – feminine)
Ustedes (You – plural, formal)
2. Verb stem.It is the part of the verb (infinitive) that does not change when conjugated.
To understand this, see the example below:
“amar” – This is the infinitive form.
The stem of “amar” is the remaining part after having removed the –ar ending.
Am-ar“Am” is the stem and “ar” is the ending.
And for second and third conjugation verbs it is also the same:
Com-er
Dorm-ir
Where “com-” and “dorm-” are the corresponding stems. To conjugate a verb, it is necessary to add the corresponding suffixes to the stem, according to tense (present, future, etc…), person (I, you, he, she…) and number (singular or plural). After having clarified the basics about conjugation in Spanish, you can find below the conjugation of the verb “odiar”.
(Note it is not possible to type accents, so whenever a vowel needs an accent, you’ll see the symbol [‘] after that vowel.)
