Apex, North Carolina is home to some great public parks. If you love the outdoors and lovely, well-maintained parks, Apex definitely has that. Some of the parks have playgrounds and others are strictly trails for walking, jogging or bike riding. It's best to visit the websites for the parks to check on hours and rules before visiting them.
American Tobacco Trail
2112 County Park Dr
The American Tobacco Trail has a portion of its trails in Apex. The park runs through Durham and Wake. You can walk, jog, bicycle or ride your horse on these trails. Besides the trails there are environmental education programs for kids and adults. It's good to know there is no running water in this park so you should bring water with you.
The American Tobacco Trail has an interesting history. It's located on an abandoned railroad corridor. The railroad was used to transport tobacco leaves from the farmers in Wake, Chatham and Durham counties. In 1987 the tracks were removed. It was an informal park, meaning people just started using the area to walk and jog. In 1989, a group of began the Triangle Rails To Trails Conservancy and because of this the North Carolina Department of Transportation bought the land and began leasing it out to the three counties to develop. Wake county finished the final section of the trail in 2006.
Apex Community Park
2200 Laura Duncan Road
Apex Community Park is a great place to visit with your entire family. There's three miles of trail to walk, three ball fields, two batting cages, four basketball courts, six tennis courts and a playground. To fish here, you need a permit from the town, which is free to residents who show proof of residency. You can also use small boats on the lake.
Kelly Road Park
1609 Kelly Road
This is a fairly large park which has two playgrounds, a baseball feild, tennis courts and picnic areas. There's also an entrance to the Beaver Creek Greenway in Kelly Road Park. This is a great park to take little ones to the playground because they have two choices!
Clairmont Park
801 E. Chatham Street
Clairmont Park has sheltered picnic areas, grills, a playground and a basketball court. While this is a smaller, more neighborhood type park, it's still a good place to bring the kids to play.
Sue Helton Memorila Park
201 Matney Lane
This small park is located in the Perry Farms neighborhood. It's basically just a playground and a gazebo but it is lovely and a nice relaxing place for the kids to burn off some energy.
There's a full list of park on the Apex website. Chances are, you'll be able to find a park that you love and the kids enjoy as well.
