In this digital age, wireless internet hot-spots are becoming more and more common. However, sometimes we find ourselves at home, on the go, or in a public place with a laptop and something we need to do online, but no wireless signal in sight. If you have a BlackBerry smart phone, then you are in luck. By following a few simple steps, almost any BlackBerry device, including all models of the Curve, can be used as a modem for your laptop to connect to the internet.
If you have a BlackBerry, chances are you have everything you need to set it up as a modem. You will need the device itself, and a USB cable to connect it to your laptop. You will also need the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that came on a disc with your device, or that you can download for free online. The software needs to be at least version 5.0.1, so if you have an older version it will need to be upgraded, which it has probably already prompted you to do. Finally, if you are going to use your BlackBerry as a modem to access the internet, it will use a lot of data, so it is important that you have an unlimited data plan to avoid extra costs on your phone bill. When you have everything you need, follow these steps.
- Connect your BlackBerry to your computer using the USB cord.
- Start the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, and make sure the software detects that your device is connected. Towards the bottom of the screen, it should say “Device connected” and display the model and PIN number of your BlackBerry.
- Select the option that says “IP Modem”.
- A new screen will come up that has a button that says “Configure” on the left, and one that says “Connect” on the right. First, you want to click “Configure”, and select your mobile carrier in the Connection Profile list.
- When you have the correct carrier selected, click “Ok”, which will bring you back to the previous screen. Then, click “Connect”.
Now you should be connected. Surf the web, check your e-mail, and do whatever you normally do online.
Using a BlackBerry as a USB modem is one of the most interesting and useful features of owning one, but it is still relatively unknown by many people. It is a great trick to show to your friends who may also have a BlackBerry and is a great solution to any situation that leaves you without an internet connection.
